It is an opening that is as famous as that of Beethoven's »Fifth«, but at the same time has a much more powerful sound: »Also sprach Zarathustra« has not for nothing also made a career as film music. For the Strauss blockbuster, there is a reunion with ex-hr conductor Andrés Orozco-Estrada. The Columbian-born Viennese places Strauss's soaring symphonic poem in an exciting context: he combines it with two impressively introverted works for chorus and orchestra by Johannes Brahms, which have as their theme the relationship between gods and humans – in terms of content, therefore, very close to Strauss's »Zarathustra«. The Cello Concerto by Mieczysław Weinberg, whose 100th birthday in 2019 has ensured that this brilliant Polish composer is now a little more firmly anchored in the public consciousness, provides a counterpoint. And this appreciation is absolutely deserved, as his concert work, composed in 1948, is wonderfully lyrical, delicately melancholic, but above all consistently witty and full of esprit.
